Biography

I am currently an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Iowa. I lead the Innovative Design and Art Laboratory (IDEA Lab) and am a faculty researcher of the Virtual Soldier Research (VSR) Program at the Center for Computer-Aided Design (CCAD). I am also a faculty member of the Public Digital Arts (PDA) cluster. I received my B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Seoul National University (2009, 2013) both with the best thesis honors. During my studies, I received National Science and Engineering Scholarship (2005-2009) and Global Ph.D. Fellowship (2011-2013) from Korean Ministry of Education. Following my studies, I was awarded Presidential Postdoc Fellowship from the President of Korea and spent two years as a Postdoctoral Researcher and a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Advanced Machinery Design (IAMD) at Seoul National University, Korea (2013-2015).

I am interested in computational geometry and machine learning. I love studying theoretical foundations and developing practical algorithms for computer-aided design tasks, such as geometry interpolation/blending, statistical shape analysis, data-driven modeling, reconstruction, feature detection/matching, rigid/non-rigid registration, filtering, and parameterization. I also work on problems in interactive media, including virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR), data visualization/interaction, and new media art.
